4 The Fluid Journal Early Spring 2013 Leading researchers, funded by the Fluid Fertilizer Foundation headquartered in Manhattan, Kansas, led information-packed sessions for agricultural attendees gathered from around the nation and overseas at the 22nd Annual Fluid Forum held from February 18 to 20 at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona. Heading the list of distinguished speakers was ag economist Dr. Matt Roberts of Ohio State University, who spoke on 2012 crop impacts and agriculture’s future lookout. An insightful look into the world of research was given by Jean Payne of the Illinois Fertilizer and Ag Chemical Association on new approaches to fertilizer check-off resources. A pre-luncheon address on Energizing America by Dr. John Felmy, chief economist for the American Petroleum Institute, provided some riveting facts for addressing problems concerning America’s energy policies. Dr. Randall Nelson of Kansas State University provided helpful tips on optimizing nitrogen and irrigation timing in corn fertigation, using remote sensing. Over the Monday afternoon through Tuesday time frame 20 sessions were conducted. Attendees listened intently as a broad range of the very latest in fluid technology was reported by energy experts, economists, and agricultural researchers from North America and around the world. At the Tuesday noon Annual Meeting, where a multi-course luncheon was enjoyed, industry members deserving recognition were honored. Researcher to the Year Award when to Dr. Jim Schepers of the USDA-ARS (retired), for his outstanding contributions to the fluid fertilizer industry. The prestigious Werner Nelson Award was presented to Dr. David Mengel of Kansas State University for his outstanding contributions to soil fertility practices and plant nutrient management. Fluid fellow awards, given in recognition of leadership in the fluid fertilizer industry, were presented to Dr. Rob Mikkelsen of IPNI, Mary Hughes, administrative assistant of the FFF, Dr. John Clapp, Tessenderlo-Kerley (retired), and Alan Blaylock of Agrium Advanced Technologies. At the close of the meeting, the gavel was passed from Board Chair Steven Weiner of Cartersville Elevator, Inc. to John Guglielmi of The Andersons. In 2014, the Fluid Forum will be held at an exciting new location, Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona. Dates are February 17 to 19, 2014. Be sure to put it on your calendar.
