4 The Fluid Journal Early Spring 2011 FLUID FORUM RECAP On-Farm Cropping Intensiﬁcation Focus of Attention at 20th Annual Fluid Forum Attendees from around the nation and overseas were given a day and a half of information-packed presentations by leading researchers funded by the Fluid Fertilizer Foundation and other prominent experts in the industry. Heading the list of distinguished speakers was Dr. Paul Fixen of the International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI) who spoke on the ins and outs of preparing for cropping intensification in today's world of agriculture. He was followed by a graphically compelling look into the importance of zinc in plant nutrition by Dr. Ismail Cakmak of Sabanci University in Istanbul, Turkey. Drs. Fred Below and Laura Overstreet of the University of Illinois followed up on last year's presentation on the importance of striving for 300 bu/A corn by presenting recent research targeted at inputs required for high corn yields and the reason such research is needed in order to obtain truly sustainable crop production. One treat and delight was D. D. Lewis, possessor of two Super Bowl championship rings, who spoke about his multi-seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. As a member now of the PotashCorp team, he treated a packed room to an animated slide presentation he uses to "coach" kids about NPK. A total of 19 sessions was conducted over the Monday-to-Tuesday noon time frame. Capacity audiences listened intently as a broad range of the very latest in fluid technology was reported by agricultural researchers from North America and around the world. Fluid Fellow Awards, given in recognition of leadership in the fluid fertilizer industry, were presented to Virgil Harbach of HarBrand Inc., Mike Stewart of IPNI, and Dean Fairchild, consulting advisor with the Mosaic Company. At the close of the meeting the gavel was passed from Ron Wachter of Nu Chem to Steven Weiner of Cartersville Elevator, Inc. as the FFF's 2011 chair. In 2012, the Fluid Forum will again be held at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona. Dates are February 19 to 21, 2012. Be sure to put it on your calendar.
