4 Fluid Journal Fall 1998 Plots consisted of eight 15-inch wide rows, 25 feet in length. Plots were laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications of each treatment. Samples were taken to a depth of 36 inches at planting time. A "JMC Backsaver" probe was used to collect soil samples. Sixteen cores for each depth increment were composited. Hybrid. Pioneer Brand 8310 was planted no-till into the previous crop residue. Seeding rate was 80,000 plants/A. Khosla is research associate, Dr. Alley is professor, Davis is agricultural extension agent, and Dr. Brann is extension grains specialist at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
