4 Fluid Journal Spring 1993 Another way to think about crop N use efficiency is to simply compare N inputs from all sources with crop N removal. This approach to N budgeting is generally thought to be less precise than the above fertilizer N use efficiency calculations, but tends to integrate the various N transformations that take place in soil. The latter approach requires some assumptions and/or estimations to quantify the N inputs, but this concept is frequently adequate to evaluate the economic and environmental implications of a cropping system. Dr. Schepers is soil scientist, USDA - ARS; Dr. Watts is irrigation specialist in the Biological System Engineering Dept.; Dr. Peterson is research scientist, Agronomy Department; all are associated with the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Nebraska.
